Our Vintage Collection
We offer a very special selection of Reclaimed and Old Growth lumber. The lumber from the Reclaimed varieties comes from structures having been catalogued for demolition. Expert eyes scour the buildings, and those structures deemed acceptable are carefully taken apart and brought to the lumber mill. The wood is cut into wide planks, which are then kiln-dried, sized, and carefully graded.
Just like antiques in the furniture world, reclaimed wood is in limited supply. However, by giving this rare resource a second life, stress on our forests can help be reduced.
Old Growth is not to be confused with Virgin Growth. Virgin Growth is used to describe a forested area that has never been touched by man. Rightfully so, the areas of Virgin Growth are not part of any logging operation. Old Growth, which more accurately refers to full growth, is a tree that is allowed to reach full maturity. At maturity, it is necessary and beneficial to cut the timber. Similar to harvesting a garden by picking the ripe vegetables, managing the land properly is essential for its overall health and long term production. This means that the timber from Old Growth Eastern White Pine and Old Growth Heart Pine is harvested between the ages of 80-120 years old, versus 30-60 years.
