At first glance, this Quartersawn Oak base cabinet looks to be a basic drawer above door arrangement. But when viewed from another angle, we find this seemingly straightforward design is full of surprises.

Our second image turns the cabinet ever so slightly to reveal an open shelf hiding behind false door and drawer fronts.  This cabinet is in fact the end of an island, designed to match two other pieces with working doors and drawers in the same arrangement.  The client wanted the piece to match the front of the island, and to accommodate a microwave oven as well.

Our third image shows a second surprise, a removable cutting board living a double life.  One, as a 1 1/2” thick, solid maple cutting board, and two, as a sturdy shelf for dishes before and after being warmed in the microwave.

In our fourth image we step back to see the cabinet as a whole, with the cutting board drawer completely extended and locked into place.

Next , we’ve removed the cutting board to give a better view of the thick, solid maple.  (We would also like to let you feel how heavy it is, but that’s a little difficult through cyberspace!)

Our last image pulls out the bottom drawer and shows off the solid craftsmanship.
